Detailed design for hydrogen network in the North Sea Canal Area completed: “Extensive coordination was needed to arrive at a route that works for everyone”

The detailed design for the hydrogen network being developed by HyNetwork in the North Sea Canal Area has been completed. This covers both a new hydrogen pipeline and an existing natural gas pipeline that will be converted. This marks an important milestone in the technical development of the network. We asked our colleague Thomas Steenbergen how such a network can be integrated into an already busy port area.

At the city's oldest social enterprise, people and materials get a second chance

The story of Milieuwerk began in 1992, with the aim of giving people from Amsterdam’s Spaarndammerbuurt a fair chance at meaningful work. Electrical appliances from across the city were collected and sorted at Milieuwerk, just outside Amsterdam. Today, the company is located in the Port of Amsterdam and employs 120 people who, as David Jansen (41), Director of Milieuwerk and the Recycling Service Centre (RSC), puts it: “struggle to find or keep a job on their own.”

Offshore installation vessel Boreas arrives in the port of Amsterdam

On Monday, March 10, the new offshore installation vessel from Dutch company Van Oord arrived at TMA Logistics in the Port of Amsterdam. To reach its destination, the massive vessel—175 meters long and 63 meters wide—had to navigate through the world’s largest sea lock in IJmuiden, an impressive sight. In Amsterdam, the final outfitting and commissioning work will be completed before the Boreas departs for its first offshore wind project. So far, the Boreas is the widest vessel to have passed through the IJmuiden Sea Lock.

Argent Energy opens bio-based technical-grade glycerine plant in Amsterdam port area

Argent Energy, a European biofuels manufacturer, opened Europe's largest technical-grade glycerine plant in the Amsterdam port area on Friday, September 27. The glycerine plant will upgrade by-products of the biodiesel production process to a product suitable for wide use in the chemical industry.
