We’re opening up the locks for...

Production and storage of renewable fuels

We want to remain a major energy and fuel port and aim to do so by becoming climate-neutral by 2050. With our good hinterland connections, knowledge and infrastructure for blending fuels, and multiple biobased production facilities nearby, the Port of Amsterdam is definitely in the running to become the renewable fuel port of Europe.

This is how we work on the production and storage of renewable fuels in the Port of Amsterdam:

Waterstof H2

lmport of hydrogen

Demand for hydrogen will soon exceed supply. That’s why we are working with H2A – a consortium of several international parties – to set up a 100% green value chain for the transport, storage, and distribution of hydrogen in the Amsterdam port area and its hinterland, including large industrial hubs in the Netherlands and Germany.

Synthetic kerosene plant

We are building a factory that will produce synthetic kerosene right here in the Port of Amsterdam. We are doing this together with start-up Synkero, the aviation industry and the City of Amsterdam. The raw material for this synthetic kerosene is CO2, which is captured from the air or from industrial emissions. This CO2 is then converted into synthetic kerosene using green hydrogen.

AMA facility 2.0

Methanol produced from non-recyclable waste

Gidara Energy is building a biofuel plant in the Port of Amsterdam: Advanced Methanol Amsterdam. This plant will convert previously non-recyclable waste into methanol. The AMA plant will produce approximately 87.5 kilotons of renewable methanol a year. This is equivalent to the waste from 290,000 households that would otherwise be sent to landfills or incinerated.

Investing in new port facilities

The production and storage of renewable fuels require new facilities and infrastructure. Together with Argent Energy, we are investing €20 million in new port facilities in Amsterdam’s Hornhaven. The development of new port facilities will enable quick growth of the production of sustainable fuels.

We've opened the largest sea lock in the world

With the new sea lock, the Port of Amsterdam is once again assured of reliable sea access for a long time to come. With this new facility, we can work together with the municipality and other parties in the North Sea Canal area on the development of the port into a sustainable and circular energy and raw materials hub.

Companies that want to increase their circular activities

The circular industry is given plenty of space to evolve and grow in the port area. For example, we help these companies establish themselves, continuously work on optimising infrastructure and connect new and existing companies to each other so that they can mutually reinforce each other.

Investing in future-proof infrastructure

Besides seeking more and better connections, we are also investing in future-proof infrastructure – both above and below ground. This way goods can be transported quickly and easily to and from the port, by water, road, rail and pipelines.
