Greater Flexibility Through Mixed Mooring

25 March 2026

The port of Amsterdam is taking an important step toward a future‑proof inland shipping sector. As of December 1, 2025, mixed mooring is permitted, allowing berths to be used more efficiently and flexibly. This creates additional space, improves traffic flow, and enhances the use of existing infrastructure — a clear win for the industry.

Thanks to a more modern and safer inland fleet, combined with extensive risk analyses by I&W, RWS, RIVM and the port authorities, it is now considered safe for vessels carrying different categories of dangerous goods — and even vessels without dangerous cargo — to moor alongside each other under specific conditions.

Port of Amsterdam is therefore designating Usselincxhaven Wachtsteiger East and West as new locations where mixed mooring is permitted. This targeted measure directly increases capacity within the port area.
