Results and developments in 2023

Port in transition

In 2023, one of the coal terminals started building a large hall for agricultural products on the site where coal was previously stored. The site of a second coal terminal was taken back at the end of 2022. Other activities, such as the transhipment of scrap metal, now take place here. The third coal terminal was partly taken over in 2023 by a major logistics party, which supports our decision to stop transhipping coal in the port by 2030.

Hydrogen network

The development of the hydrogen pipeline networks in the port area continues. Both the higher-pressure hydrogen network and the lower-pressure hydrogen network have reached the next project phase. For example, the final 'Notitie Reikwijdte en Detailniveau' for the HNS network was published in late 2023. The development of hydrogen infrastructure will ensure that the North Sea Canal area is connected to the nationwide HNS hydrogen network, which connects five industry clusters in the Netherlands to each other, to hydrogen production and storage sites and to foreign countries.

Energy Cooperative

The Amsterdam port region faces congestion. This can lead to a delay in the development and energy transition within the Amsterdam port. To make smarter use of the available capacity on the grid, we founded the Energie Coöperatie Amsterdamse Haven (ECAH) in 2023; an energy cooperative for local energy supply. The first project will provide a partial solution to grid congestion: a virtual grid will be set up to link and share scarce (grid) capacity, local generation and storage facilities

NOVEX

In 2023, under the leadership of Programmabureau Noordzeekanaalgebied and together with other parties, we started working on the draft development perspective. This development perspective is part of the national government's NOVEX programme. Many spatial challenges that are important for the future of the region are brought together in the development perspective. These include the energy transition, the development towards a circular economy, the need for more housing and a healthy living environment. These challenges require not only physical space, but also environmental and safety space. The area must also be climate-proofed.

Sustainable port

Several companies have made investments to make the port more sustainable. Bunge Loders Croklaan, for example, started building a new factory on a site at HoogTij in 2023. With this new factory, Bunge aims to achieve direct energy savings of 40% and a 90% CO2 reduction by 2030. Many companies have also invested in solar energy, and in 2023 we already reached the target of 250,000 m2 of solar panels by the end of 2024. This target has therefore been increased, so we are now aiming for 350,000 m2 of solar panels on the roofs, together with our customers.
