Annual report 2024: Steps towards a greener port

Key figures

Results and developments in 2024

Transition continues

The port sector continued steadily. We reached agreements with oil terminals on making their cargo more sustainable. Together with terminals and other partners, we are focusing on developing intra-European and intercontinental corridors for the import of green hydrogen. With other clients, we continued working on transforming coal transshipment sites. In doing so, we are moving closer to our goal of ending coal transshipment in the port by 2030.

Investing in the future

In 2024, Port of Amsterdam invested in various areas, including shore power facilities—most notably the installation for sea cruise ships—quay infrastructure such as an offshore quay in the Afrikahaven, and a charging hub for heavy electric equipment. We also continued developing infrastructure for new energy sources, such as hydrogen pipelines, a steam network, and a CO₂ network. In addition, we advanced the Energiehaven IJmond project, which is crucial for the construction and maintenance of offshore wind farms. Future-focused companies need all of this to become more sustainable, to innovate, and to remain competitive.

Regional approach

It has a regional, national, and even European dimension. That’s why we increasingly take the initiative to address these issues together with partners, helping us evolve into a more regionally organized port-industrial complex. In 2024, for example, we entered into a partnership with Port of Den Helder to jointly accelerate the energy transition.

Challenges

Geopolitical developments have had an impact. Some sectors or companies in the port are struggling as a result—for example, the plastic recycling sector. High construction and financing costs, lengthy permitting procedures, and challenging market conditions all play a role. At the same time, the growing call for strategic independence also presents opportunities for industry.

Vision 2040 and Strategy 2025-2028

In 2024, together with partners and stakeholders, we developed the Vision 2040 “Green Port Amsterdam: a destination port for clean shipping, circular industry, and renewable energy,” as well as the new Strategy 2025–2028. These documents outline our vision of a port that is fully equipped to be climate neutral by 2050, attracting activities and cargo flows that align with this goal. We have a strong foundation and continue to invest in a port that adds value to both the economy and society.
