Strategy 2021-2025

By 2025, we want to be a leading European seaport, at the forefront of the transition to a sustainable society.

Strategy 2021-2025: Taking the lead

In 2025 we will be a visible leader in the transition, taking steps to become a climate-neutral port in 2050. We will achieve these ambitions with three main strategies, which in turn will help us reach our 2030 Vision:

1. We let customers, cargoes and activities grow in a more sustainable manner.
2. We will make the shipping process smoother, safer and more transparent.
3. We will develop a future-proof port complex.

Read more about these strategies on page 34 of the Strategic Plan.

Boegpraat
Boegpraat, the podcast

We want to be the frontrunner in the transition to a sustainable society by 2025. However, this isn't something that happens overnight and it provides us with food for thought every single day.
Because we believe in the power of collaboration, we will be talking to companies and partners located in the harbour about these issues during our podcast: Boegpraat.

Our shareholder has presented the Municipal Harbour Vision 2020-2040. With this vision and a new 5-year strategy, we have aligned once again toward our shared goal of creating a sustainable port.

Don't forget to check out the Harbour nota 2020-2030, in which the national policy for the Dutch port sector is documented.

The strategy in a nutshell

What are we going to do in the years ahead to become the pioneer regarding sustainability and develop a true metropolitan port? And what is needed to achieve this?

In this video, Eduard de Visser, Director of Strategy & Innovation, explains what our plans are for the coming years.

Seven concrete goals to accelerate

In order to be that leading European seaport by 2025 and to lead the way in the transition to a sustainable society, we are moving forward with seven concrete goals. From the establishment of circular process industry to keeping the shipping industry on schedule.

Read more about these concrete targets from page 29 in the Strategic Plan.

Goal 1: Strengthening our competitive position and maintain our market share

Doel 1
Progress

The share of non-fossil cargo flows in transhipment is under pressure due to lagged transhipment of agri-products (-12%) and increased transhipment of coal (+41%). Covid caused volatility in achieving this goal in 2021, but the final goal remains in sight.

Goal 2: Growing in non-fossil turnover

Progress

We are on track to achieving this goal. We reached 61.7% in 2021, which can be accredited to a significant decline in oil products (-13%). As a result, the percentage of non-fossils increased in proportion, despite the increased coal throughput (+41%).

Goal 3: We ensure that almost all shipping arrives, and departs, on time

Doel-3_icoon_grijs-cropped
Progress

Important in achieving this goal is a predictable and efficient process for the handling of ships. Various initiatives are underway that contribute to improving this and will aid us in achieving this goal by 2025.

Goal 4: We are growing the storage capacity for alternative fuels

Doel4
Progress

With 5.4% as our starting point, the storage capacity for alternative fuels increased to 5.7% in 2021. This goal will remain challenging until the end of the strategy period. This is because long-term investments have to be made, over which we only have an indirect influence.

Goal 5: We are aiming towards a more circular process industry

Doel5
Progress

This target is behind schedule, partly due to nitrogen restrictions and congestion on the electricity grid. It is predicted that we will catch up on this goal in the coming years and that the target will be achieved within the designated time frame.

Goal 6: We will reduce CO2 emissions

Doel6
Progress

It is impossible to estimate this target's current state because emission models for industry and shipping are still in development. Our organization is responsible for a small share of the CO2 emissions in the port area,  and we were responsible for only a small increase in CO2 emissions. We will, however, still invest in actions that will support the reduction of CO2. For example, investments in shore power and green patrol vessels.

Goal 7: We create space for development

Doel7
Progress

With 11 hectares of development space already designated, we are on track to achieve this goal. But we still face many challenges; the land is scarce in the port area, and demand is high. This creates high levels of competition and requires vigilance and effective action in setting up processes with (potential) customers.
