On Friday June 17th inst. logistic service provider MEO celebrated its 75th anniversary. Around 400 employees, relations and customers were invited to the joyous event, which was held at the MEO location in Velsen. A memorable gathering which emphasized the growth, successes and hardworking mentality of the company.

MEO’s General Manager, John de Boer, opened the anniversary party underlining the fact that collaboration and team work elevated them from a small company with few personnel in 1941 to a company with 175 employees today.

1+1=3

MEO stands for ‘Medemblik En Omstreken’ (Medemblik And Surroundings) and originated in West Friesland, a region in the Northern part of the Dutch province North-Holland. The company started off in 1941 as Transport Federation Medemblik, prepping wholesale products for transport from the auction-mart onward, making them ready for shipping. In the 60’s and 70’s the business activities relocated to the ports in the North Sea Canal Area. The first vessels with seed-potatoes were loaded in the port of Beverwijk, while large bags holding cocoa beans were hauled in the port of Amsterdam. The cocoa activities increased in the 80’s, accelerating the company’s growth the following decades. In 2006 the group expanded with the arrival of Amsterdam Coldstore Solutions (ACS). In 2011 MEO formed the TMA Group together with THOR Shipping and ACS. Since 2014 Holland Cargo Terminal (HCT) is also part of the group.

Collaboration in the North Sea Canal Area

MEO’s typical West Fries ‘hard work pays off’ mentality has proven to be of great value over the last 75 years. A mentality which has seeped through to fellow TMA Group members THOR Shipping and ACS. The TMA Group has stimulated collaboration between the ports along the North Sea Canal through transhipment and storage of potatoes, steel and forest products. HCT was centre stage for the assembly and transhipment of the ‘Westermeerwind’ project, the largest Dutch set of nearshore wind turbines which was officially opened June this year.

Port of Amsterdam is proud to call MEO one of its customers. Congratulations MEO! And many more years to come!
