Internet criminals tried to steal funds or data from more than half (52%) of small companies in 2018, as is revealed by the Cybersecurity Awareness survey that Alert Online conducted among companies in the SME sector.

Phishing and acquisition fraud are the most common methods used in these attacks. However, although small companies are increasingly under threat they are becoming less concerned about their digital security. This is also the reason why the Minister of Justice and Security, Mr Grapperhaus, called on these companies to arm themselves better against Internet criminality.

Small companies, in particular, are less inclined to implement technological and organisational measures. This not only increases the risk of them becoming a victim, but also increases the impact of cyber incidents.
