Compulsory pilotage

Seagoing ships navigating in the North Sea Canal Area are subject to compulsory pilotage. More information about compulsory pilotage can be found in the Compulsory Pilotage Decree.

Is your ship 75 metres or less in length?

Ships of 75 metres or less in length (i.e. length over all) are exempt from compulsory pilotage.
Please consult the Compulsory Pilotage Decree 1995, article 4, paragraph 2i.

Is your ship more than 75 metres in length?

Ships more than 75 metres in length may in some cases apply for an exemption from compulsory pilotage.

  1. Is your ship registered in the Small Ships Register?
In that case you may apply for an exemption for the area between the pilot station and the IJmuiden breakwaters. Please send your application to portoffice@portofamsterdam.com.

Should you wish to register your ship in the Small Ships Register, please contact Loodswezen (Dutch Pilots' Organisation).
  2. Is your ship NOT registered in the Small Ships Register and is your ship 95 metres or less in length?
In that case you may apply for an exemption. Please send your application to portoffice@portofamsterdam.com. Please note that you will at least have to make a number of assessment trips with a pilot.
Is your ship more than 95 metres in length?

If your ship is more than 95 metres in length, you are not eligible for an exemption.
In this case, however, you may apply for a Pilotage Exemption Certificate (PEC). Please send your application to portoffice@portofamsterdam.com. An exam is required to obtain a Pilotage Exemption Certificate. Please consult the Pilotage Exemption Certificate Holders Decree of the Shipping Traffic Act.

You may apply for an exemption or a Pilotage Exemption Certificate for the following areas:

  • IJmuiden Roads/IJmuiden: IJmuiden Approach and the Outer Harbour, the Noorderbuitenkanaal, the Zuiderbuitenkanaal, the Verbindingskanaal, the Hoogovenkanaal, the Outer Harbour, the Hoogovenhaven, the Vissershaven and the Haringhaven.
  • Beverwijk/Velsen: The IJmuiden locks including the North Sea Canal up to kilometre marker 5, including the harbour basins and ports connected to it.
  • Zaanstad: The North Sea Canal from kilometre marker 5 up to 19, including the harbour basins and ports connected to it on the north side.
  • Amsterdam: The North Sea Canal from kilometre marker 5 up to the entrance to the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal, including the harbour basins and ports connected to it - insofar as they do not fall under the Zaanstad area.
