Over 44% of all freight transport to and from Amsterdam seaports takes place through inland shipping. The port of Amsterdam is close and well connected to the Rhine. Via inland shipping large volumes of goods can be transported efficiently at low costs in a sustainable way to industrial and consumer markets in the Netherlands, Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
Inland shipping improvements
Together with market parties, Port of Amsterdam is actively further developing inland navigation connections, for instance the connections on the Rhine and towards the northern Dutch provinces. Furthermore, Port of Amsterdam is expanding the berths for barges at the terminals and investing to further improve working conditions and safety for inland shipping with facilities such as lighting, parking space for cars and Wi-Fi hotspots.
