Sail Amsterdam 2005's programme, activities and communication will give shape and meaning to three basic themes including the maritime links between the past, the present and the future. The ties between different worlds and cultures are another significant theme for next year as well as the role of young people. ´Enjoy a world of Friendships´ is the binding slogan for all three.

Under the title ´The Cities of Sail 2005´ Amsterdam will be the seventh finishing city for the transatlantic competition between the famous tall ships. The 2005 opening sail-by, on which twenty Tall Ships and hundreds of historic sailing and motor vessels will sail via IJmuiden along the North Sea Canal to Amsterdam, is scheduled for 17 August 2005. Numerous foreign naval vessels and renowned sail boats from various countries will be attending the event. The Dutch navy too will have two vessels on view at IJmuiden. At the last event in 2000, visitor numbers reached 2.3 million.
