Amsterdam Port’s coal sector expanding

Source: De Scheepsvaartkrant, 29 September 2004

Amsterdam Port’s coal sector will shortly have greater storage and transhipment capacity as a result of expansion of two coal transhipment companies – OBA, or Overslag Bedrijf Amsterdam and ACP, or Amsterdam Coal Processing.

The storage and transhipment of coal plays an important role in Amsterdam. Some 30 percent of total port transhipments are currently coal. The expansion is needed to meet growing demand from Germany. To facilitate the expansion, the Amsterdam Port Authority has over recent time cleared the former Ford site on the Westhaven and prepared it for construction.

Mooring facilities have been made suitable for sea-going vessels and the quay been extended to 300 metres. A second 300 metre long deep sea quay will be built in the extension. Both companies will have each their own deep water mooring where large sea-going vessels can be safely loaded and unloaded.
