Over the past years Amsterdam proved the fastest growing European port by far, according to Eurostat.
The United Kingdom, Italy and the Netherlands are the three main maritime cargo transporters. In none of the other EU countries are cargo volumes loaded in the ports so much smaller than the volume of unloaded cargo as in the Netherlands.
These results have been published by Eurostat in the ‘Maritime transport of goods 1997 – 2002’ report. During the period under review the Port of Rotterdam continued to be the largest port.
