On July 8, Freek Ossel (Amsterdam Alderman for Port Affairs) will drive the first pile for the construction of a distribution center in the Atlaspark in the Port of Amsterdam. The Atlaspark lies to the south of the Afrikahaven (Afrika Port). Called “Districentrum Afrikahaven,” the new facility will cover an area of 105,000  m2 and will consist of six warehouses, ranging in size from 14,000 m2 to 22,000 m2. The smallest section to be leased out is 5,200 m2. This investment by

David Hart Vastgoed (DHVG) serves to underline the attraction of the Atlaspark as a topnotch industrial park for logistics.

Last year, David Hart Vastgoed (DHVG) and the Port of Amsterdam reached agreement on the development of a large distribution center in the Atlaspark. DHVG is building the distribution center on a risk-bearing basis. The warehouses will feature ESFR sprinkler systems, dock shelters, ground-level doors, an unobstructed stacking height of 10.5 meters and a floor load of 4,000 kilos per square meter. If so required by customers, special facilities for the storage of hazardous materials will be built as well.

Earlier, DHVG developed a comparable and similarly sized distribution center in the Port of Rotterdam named “Districenter Seinehaven.” At present, the entire warehousing facility in Rotterdam has been either leased out or sold. This success has led DHVG to turn its attention to Amsterdam.

DHVG has high hopes for Amsterdam. Its Managing Director, David Hart, says: “The Port of Amsterdam has enormous potential for growth, and the growth figures achieves by Ceres are testament to this. What is working in Amsterdam’s favor are the arrival of major container shipping companies; the limited container terminal capacity in Northwestern Europe; as well as Amsterdam’s geographic location. Things will get even better when the Westrandweg (road) has been constructed by mid-2012, and Schiphol Airport will be just a 10-minute trip away. All in all, we expect to see an increasing demand for high-quality warehouses. These have not yet been realized in the Amsterdam Port area. I regard the Port of Amsterdam as a unique location.”

Alderman Freek Ossel, who is responsible for port affairs, is delighted at DHVG’s decision to build such as large distribution center in the Amsterdam port area. He comments: “DHVG’s investment in the Atlaspark is an important step forward for this port as a smart cargo hub. This will make it easier for other companies to establish themselves in the Port of Amsterdam. This is another breakthrough, which will create a lot of direct and indirect employment.”
