Port of Amsterdam has drawn up a development vision for the Minervahaven. Main aims of this vision are revitalisation and intensification
The municipality of Amsterdam wants areas of the city to perform various different functions. One must be able to live in as well as work in an area. One of the areas this policy will effect, is the Minervahaven. This port basin was built around 1880 and for a long time played an important role in wood transhipment and processing. At this moment there are still some wood transhipment companies, but port-bound activities are declining.
Buffer between city and port
Together with the diminishing of the large-scale activities in the Houthaven, the city is also marching on. The adjacent area of the former wood ports has now developed into a residential and working area. In the meantime many small-scale companies who have sought refuge from the busy city, have found their place among the old warehouses and industrial buildings. This has resulted in the area having a messy and in some places degenerate appearance. The Minervahaven area now forms a buffer between the residential area of the city and the heavier industry in the rest of the port. One of the most important questions is how this buffer function between city and port can be given form.
Creating a vision is not something done alone. Port of Amsterdam has multiple parties involved in the process.
