The Amsterdam port area is made up of four ports and is also known as Amsterdam Seaports. Together they are the economic engine of the North Sea Canal area. Amsterdam Seaports is the fourth largest transhipment port of North Europe.
The Amsterdam port region is made up of the ports of Amsterdam, Beverwijk, Velsen/IJmuiden and Zaanstad. The four ports lie along the North Sea Canal, and while operating independently they work closely together.
The port area is one of the most important hubs in Europe. This is mainly due to the favourable location by the sea, and the good connections with the hinterland via water, road, rail and air.
The port is also a popular (international) business location. Some 70 million tons of goods are transhipped annually, which means that Amsterdam ranks fourth on the list of most important North West seaports.
The area is of great economic importance: the direct maritime added value amounts to over three billion euro and over 38,000 people work there.
The intensive co-operation has been laid down in the North Sea Canal Area Master Plan. This is the collective vision of both public and private partners focusing on the area's development. Two organisations, North Sea Canal Regional Development Company (or RON) and the Management Platform Master Plan, are involved in the implementation of the plan.
The Seaports aim to maintain and expand their prominent position in the region, as well as nationally and internationally, by working together and developing a vision in the shape of the Master Plan. The administrative and commercial tasks have been arranged via a general agreement between the RON and the Management Platform, thus allowing the region to implement the Master Plan unequivocally.
