Inland Shipping

Over one third of all goods transport to and from Amsterdam seaports takes place through inland shipping. The port of Amsterdam is close to the Rhine. In this way, both industrial and consumer markets in the Netherlands, Germany, Austria and Switzerland can be served quickly and efficiently.

Inland shipping of goods

  • Oil products form a large part of inland transport from Amsterdam. BP, Oiltanking and Europoint utilise inland shipping services frequently for the transit of oil products to the hinterland.
  • Igma and Cargill transport materials for feed to factories in the Netherlands and Europe.
  • The transhipment companies OBA and Rietlanden utilise inland barges and push barge combinations to transport coal to Europe.
  • For container transport, there are various regular shuttle services a number of times a week between Amsterdam and Rotterdam, Antwerp and the (Germany) hinterland.

Together with market parties, the Amsterdam Port Authority is active in talks to further develop inland shipping, for instance on the Rhine and the links with the northern provinces.
